Allama
Qazweeni,
in his Riyaz-ul-Quds, gives the total number of prisoners
after the Battle of Ashurra as 64. There is at
least one report (there may be many more which I have not seen)
from Imam Zayn al-Abideen in which the Imam says:
"We were twelve members
of the Ahlul-Bayt who were tied by our necks in one rope when we
were presented to Yazeed in Damascus."
That report tells us
that the remainder of the
64
prisoners had either been freed before reaching Damascus, or some
of them actually may have perished on the way from Karbala to
Damascus".
