Some Traditions

"Expect the Relief and never despair of receiving comfort from Allah.  The most favourable act to Allah is the expectation of the Relief and the acts that are pursued steadily."

-Imam Ali (a.s)-

There is a tradition of the Holy Prophet "With the help of hair-dye turn old age into youth so that you do not resemble the Jews". When Imam Ali was asked to comment on this tradition, he said that in the early stage of Islam there were very few Muslims. The Holy Prophet advised them to look young and energetic and not to adopt the fashion of the Jews (priest) having long, white flowing beards. But the Muslims were not in minority then, theirs was a strong and powerful State, they could take up any style they liked.

This event is of an Arab wood-cutter who lived a very simple life with his family in a hut. Daily, he used to go to the forest with an axe, which was very far off from his place. He used to cut wood and sell it  in the bazaar and with the small earnings, he used to feed his family.

Once he could not cut sufficient wood in time because of his blunt edged axe. Finally, when he did cut the required quantity, it was late. He was very much perplexed for he knew that by the time he reaches the market, no one would be there to buy the wood. And if the wood was not sold, he would have no money to feed the family.

He could think of no way to feed the hungry children for the next 24 hours. While he was pondering over the matter, he heard the trotting of a horse upon which was a masked rider, approaching towards him. After the salutations, the rider enquired of the wood cutter as to what he was doing there since it was getting dark, to which the wood-cutter explained the situation.

Upon hearing the wood-cutter's misery, the masked rider gave him five coins and instructed him to buy there with sugar, grapes, flower–petals and agarbatti for the Fatheha of Hazrath Ali (a.s). He assured that, insh'Allah, on his executing the instructions, he would be relieved of the misery and afflictions.

No sooner the wood-cutter accepted the coins, the masked rider vanished mysteriously and the wood-cutter was further astonished that instead of being alone in the forest, he was at home with his family. He could not believe what had happened but when he opened his palm, he found five coins. He mentioned the whole incident to his wife and then went out to buy the necessary things for the Fatheha. The couple then with all sincerity offered Fatheha of Hazrath Ali ('a). The wood cutter then left to go to the bazaar. He could witness the benefits derived on offering Fateha because he received a little more than the usual for the wood.

The next day, he left for the forest a  little early. He came across a dry tree which he selected for cutting. He was in high spirits that day. He was confident that Ali would henceforth help him and Allah shall remove from him his poverty and misery. So he picked up the axe and taking the name of Ali he used his all strength and stuck the tree. On a second strike, the tree fell off on the ground. By the Grace of Allah, he happened to see a treasure-trove at the bottom of the tree. With great hesitancy, he picked up just two silver coins and the rest he buried at the same spot. He left for the bazaar without the wood and brought provisions for the house and returned home to narrate the whole incident to his wife. Both of them decided that due to favours of Allah, it would be more befitting that hence forth they should remain more busy in remembrance of Allah and the Fateha Ceremony should be carried out regularly. Thereafter, the couple devoted much more time in prayers. They also decided to move from the village to the forest. In the forest, they built small houses for poor families as well as for themselves. They also made arrangement for a “Sabeel” and rest house for the travellers and passers by.

One occasion, the King with his army was in that part of jungle for hunting. Finding some hutments in the forest he sent aides to bring water for him. The attendants came to the hut and found a beautiful Sabeel with cold neat water within a beautiful garden. The wood cutter provided them with drinking cup and a leather bottle for water. On their return to the King with water, they related to him what they had seen. They said that there was a resting place there with gardens and even a small Mosque. After quenching his thirst, the king enquired as to where they found the beautiful drinking cup from? Then he ordered that the wood cutter be presented before him. The men informed the King that the wood-cutter was performing prayers and that it was getting quite late and the man could be presented later before the King at the Palace. So they all returned back to the Kingdom.

On reaching the Palace, the King narrated to the Queen the Jungle hutments. On hearing the episode, the queen desired to interview the couple to question them certain things. The next day the family of the wood cutter was presented before the king. The family was given state-guest status as was requested to stay in the Kingdom for a few days.

During the stay in the palace, once the wood-cutter’s wife was with the queen. The queen before going into Hammam, requested the wood-cutters wife to keep a watch over her precious necklace. No sooner the queen entered the Hammam, the necklace on the dressing table disappeared before the eyes of the wood-cutter's wife. When the queen returned after the bath and not finding the necklace, enquired of her, who explained as to how the necklace has disappeared before her eyes mysteriously. The queen informed the king, who on suspicion imprisoned the family for stealing the necklace.

Thus the wood-cutter’s family was in prison for quite some time. During the prison term, the wood-cutter had a vision of a masked man enquiring of him whether he was regularly remembering Allah and performing Fateha of Hazrath Ali ('a). The wood-cutter replied that they had forgotten about it. He reminded them unless they do so; he would remain afflicted with the miseries. The wood-cutter said that he did not have any money on him. The masked man said that there was some money underneath, the pillow; he found two coins lying there. He saw a women passing by, whom he called and requested to bring him a few things for the Fatheha, but she refused saying that she was busy with her son’s wedding arrangements. After some time an old woman passed by, whom he pleaded. Although she was on her way to call Hakim for his son who was sick she agreed to fetch the things for the Fatheha. After some time she returned she returned and she also listen the prayers for Hazrath Ali ('a). After which she left with a portion of Fateha sweets and some water. When she reached home she was surprised that her son had survived where as the other woman who had refused to fetch Fatheha sweets, was in distress.

In a separate incident, the queen was sitting at the dressing table and suddenly she found the necklace appearing on the dressing table mysteriously. For a moment she could not believe her eyes but when she touched and saw, she remembered that the wood-cutter's wife must have spoken the truth about the disappearance of the necklace in the same manner. She reported the matter to the king, who immediately had the couple before them and asked them to forgive him. They explained to him that it was because they had forgotten to remember Allah regularly and to perform Fatheha for the Swab of Hazrath Ali ('a) that they were engulfed with the misery. On hearing this, the  king also vowed that he shall also regularly remember Allah and perform Fatheha on Thursday Nights for Hazrath Ali ('a).

Method of Thursday Night Ni’yaz of Maula Ali ('a)

h

On Thursday Nights Fatheha can be offered. The best part of this Fateha is that when regularly this Fatheha is performed on the “Specified Items” by reciting the “Specified Qur’anic Verses” as recommended for Hazrat Ali ('a) & one beseeches help from Allah for increase in Sustenance (Rozi) results are fruitful for the efforts taken. Every Thursday when all members of a house sit together and listen to these Qur’anic Verses and offer Fatheha it becomes a nice routine of the household.

Offer Ni’yaz of Hazrath Ali ('a) with reverence, humility, solemnity, sincerity, trust and faith on Thursday nights as recommended and beseech blessings of God for Apostle of God Mohammed and his Descendants ('s).  Saeed Akhtar.

[Yusufali 2:255] Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory).

[Yusufali 2:256] Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

[Yusufali 2:257] Allah is the Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light. Of those who reject faith the patrons are the evil ones: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (forever).
