Ayatollah Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem

Ayatollah Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem was born in 1939 in Najaf Al-Ashraf. His father is Ayatollah Said Mohsin Al-Tabatabai Al-Hakeem ( the top Shia Marjia from late 50s until his death in 1970).

The Al-Hakeem family is one of the greatest families in Iraq because most of its roots and sons are olamaa (scholars). This family was pursued by the dictatorial Saddam Hussain in the early 80s in Iraq, where more then 70 persons from aali Al-Hakeem were arrested in one night with no reason accept they were relatives of Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem. Later more then 20 of this family were killed.

Ayatollah Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem was the fifth son between nine brothers (5 of them killed). His childhood was in the period of the second world war, where his father preferred to live the simple life as all other poor people do. He left the school at the age of 12 to join the Hawza in Najaf and there he showed his genius. At the age of 25 he was selected to teach in the college of Osool Al-Deen at Baghdad University beside others of our great scholars. He stayed teaching there until college was stopped in 1975.

Ayatollah Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem and his teacher Shaheed Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr were known to be two of the greatest mojahideen against Saddam Husain.

After the death of his father, Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem was arrested two times. After Shahadat Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr, he decided to leave Iraq and succeeded in reaching Iran secretly to complete his jihad from there.

During his life Ayatollah Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem faced 7 murder trials.

Ayatollah al Hakeem was shahid outside of the Imam Ali ('a) Shrine after delivering a khutbah on Iraqi unity on Friday 1st Rajab, 1424. His death was caused by a massive car bomb planted by terrorists which exploded outside of the mosque killing nearly 100 other worshippers who were leaving the mosque. 100s were also critically and seriously wounded in the attack.

This brutal bombing has occurred one week after an assassination attempt against Grand Ayatullah Said Muhammed Saeed Al-Hakeem, which  killed two of his bodyguards and his driver. It has been reported that the attack had been done by the same people who killed Ayatollah Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem. Agha Said Mohammed Saeed Al Hakeem is the uncle of Ayatollah Said Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem.
